One-third of Americans are considering leaving the United States, according to new research. This amounts to more than 112 million people—a staggering number that might shock you.

But considering the current state of affairs in the United States… the divisive political atmosphere… the cost of daily life and medical care… the overall lack of safety… the tone of the average news headline…

It’s not surprising that more and more people are looking for alternatives.

The idea that the best lifestyle and investment opportunities are found beyond the borders of the U.S. is one we’ve long endorsed at Live And Invest Overseas. Our entire business was founded on it.

Right now, our Conference Team is finalizing the details of an event that’s designed to showcase the potential of life overseas for Americans.

The Big Question For Prospective Expats

If you are considering moving overseas, at some point you’ll need to ask yourself where you plan on living.

This is where you can have some fun designing your new life. The options are endless overseas, from historic villas in Old World villages… to modern condos in bustling metropolises… to beach homes that back directly onto soft sands…

In several of the countries we’ll highlight at the Retire Overseas Virtual Conference, desirable homes are much more affordable than comparable ones in the United States.

To highlight some of the potential for better, more exciting lifestyles beyond the borders of the US, here’s a round-up of current property listings in a few of the countries we’ll feature at the Retire Overseas Virtual Conference.

Greece

It’s a toss-up whether Greece is a better place for history buffs or beach lovers. It’s the birthplace of Western civilization, rich in ancient ruins and sites of historical significance.

Then again, it has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean Basin, with thousands of islands and peninsulas where you can soak up the best of Southern European sunshine and dip your toes in crystal-clear waters.

Greece has surged in popularity with expats in the past three years because word got out about its low cost of living and affordable property. The country makes things easy for prospective expats with turn-key residency options and favorable tax policies for retirees.

Crete, an island to the south of the mainland, is one of the best places to live in Greece. It’s massive—the fifth-biggest island in the Mediterranean—so while it offers the best of island living, it’s also big enough that you won’t run out of things to do.

In Lagada, in southeastern Crete, I found this charming little home of 56 square meters…

It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen-living room area spread out over two floors. The best part is the terrace with views over the Mediterranean Sea. The asking price is 135,000 euros (about $146,200).

Colombia

Colombia is a dramatically beautiful country with two coastlines—one on the Pacific and one on the Caribbean—endless beaches, snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, Spanish-colonial towns, traditional villages, and buzzing cities.

It has a relatively long-standing reputation among expats, who love it for its diversity of lifestyle options and overall affordability. This is a country where you can live well on a Social Security check alone.

It’s also straightforward in terms of residency, with a wide range of residency options (including one for retirees specifically).

One of the most popular destinations is Medellín, the culture capital of Colombia. It’s almost on par with Europe’s most sought-after cities for all that it has to offer in terms of art, music, museums, gastronomy, festivals, cinema, and more.

It’s well-loved for its weather, which most people describe as perfect—never too hot, never too cold. It sits at 5,000 feet above sea level in the Aburrá Valley, and it’s surrounded by lush, rolling hillside.

In Medellín’s most popular neighborhood, El Poblado, I found this elegant modern apartment…

It has three bedrooms and three bathrooms spread out over a sprawling 207 square meters. It features a large terrace where you can take in the beautiful views and greenery that Medellín is famous for. The asking price is $191,000.

Thailand

Known as the “Land of Smiles” because of its unfailingly friendly locals, Thailand has long welcomed expats… and it’s home to huge numbers of them. Over 100,000 foreigners live on Phuket alone.

Thailand attracts people with its tropical islands surrounded by bright-blue waters, breath-taking beaches, lush mountains and jungles, ancient temples, and an interesting culture that is responsible for creating some of the world’s most delicious dishes.

It has excellent health care (it’s a top global medical tourism destination), world-class golf courses, and easy residency options. It’s also affordable… perhaps one of the world’s best options for luxury-standard living on a modest budget. The average Social Security check affords a lot here.

Phuket is one of the most-coveted places to live in Thailand. It’s abundant in natural beauty, with beaches and green jungle, but also well-appointed in terms of amenities (with an airport, schools, hospitals, stocked grocery stores, shops, and more).

Here, on the southeast coast in the town of Rawai, I found an attractive studio for sale…

It features 57 square meters of living space, ideal for an individual or couple. It comes fully furnished with high-end furniture, and it offers great views from its spacious balcony from its position on the sixth floor of the building. The condo has shared amenities like a pool, a gym, a concierge, and manicured gardens. The asking price is $123,393.
